Chattogram, July 26 โ The Bangladesh Shipping Corporation (BSC) is set to expand its fleet with the addition of three new vessels, confirmed Brigadier General (Retd.) M Sakhawat Hossain, Shipping Adviser to the Government.
He made the announcement on Saturday afternoon while visiting the ship recycling operations at the KSRM Ship Breaking Yard in Sitakunda, Chattogram.
โThree more ships will be procured for BSC to enhance its operational capacity,โ said the adviser, speaking to reporters after the inspection.
During his visit, the adviser noted that 14 shipbreaking yards in Chattogram have been awarded the Green Shipyard Certificate for complying with the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships.
โSeveral more yards are in the pipeline for certification,โ he added.
โThose failing to comply will be required to shut down operations.โ
He acknowledged that most shipbreaking yards still lag behind international safety and environmental standards, but emphasized the government’s willingness to support and encourage compliance through necessary assistance.
Addressing concerns over labor conditions, the adviser issued strict directives to yard owners to ensure worker safety and a healthy work environment as per international labor standards.
โShipbreaking workers must be provided with adequate safety and environmental protections,โ he said.
