CHITTAGONG,ย 14ย Septembr (Ilias Ripon, CTG MAIL )
The bustling tea stalls of โJhupori,โ the corridors of dormitories, and the adda at Chattogram University stationโall these memories from decades and years past came alive once again as thousands of former students reunited in a grand celebration.
On Friday (September 12), nearly 4,000 ex-students gathered at GEC Convention Centre in the port city for a reunion organised by the Chattogram University Alumni Association.
The programme was inaugurated by releasing balloons and pigeons, led by Mohammad Aslam Chowdhury, FCA, convener of the associationโs ad-hoc committee. Special tribute was paid to the families of July Movement martyrs, while all the martyrs were remembered with honour.
The reunion turned into a bridge between past and present, as alumni of different generations rediscovered their old friends, often staring at each other in disbelief and delight.
During the discussion session, Mohammad Aslam Chowdhury, convener of the CU Alumni Associationโs reunion celebration committee, delivered the opening remarks. A welcome speech was given by committee member Mahbubur Rahman Shamim.
Among others present were Mohammad Ekramul Karim, senior joint convener MA Halim, member-secretary Kamrul Hasan Harun, joint member-secretary Md Fakhrul Islam, advocate Iftekhar Hossain Chowdhury Mohsin, and joint convener Sohrab Hossain Sohel.
โThis reunion is not just about cherishing memories, but about building fraternity and fostering mutual cooperation among alumni,โ Aslam Chowdhury said. He also stressed on collective contributions from alumni towards the universityโs development.
The programme began with a recitation from the Holy Quran, followed by a condolence motion in memory of the July martyrs. A one-minute silence was observed for martyrs including students Farhad Hossain, Hridoy Chandra Tarua of Chattogram University, and Wasim Akram of Chattogram College. Their families were later honoured with commemorative crests and stipends.
The cultural segment of the day commenced with an inaugural dance, followed by songs, recitations, comedy, and performances by former students. A raffle draw added further excitement, before the event concluded with an introduction session of the ad-hoc and reunion committees in the evening.
