The government has appointed twelve prominent individuals, including Dainik Purbokone editor Dr M Ramizuddin Chowdhury, as members of the Bangladesh Press Council.
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting issued a gazette notification on Monday, stating that the appointments were made under the Press Council Act. The council is tasked with safeguarding press freedom while maintaining ethical standards in journalism.
Among those appointed are Obaidur Rahman Shaheen, acting president of the Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ); Daulat Akhtar Mala, president of the Economic Reporters Forum; and Md Shahidul Islam, president of the Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ). The list also includes Mahfuz Anam, editor and publisher of The Daily Star; Nurul Kabir, editor of New Age; Dewan Hanif Mahmud, editor and publisher of Bonik Barta; and Shamsul Huq Zahid, editor of The Financial Express.
Others named are Akhtar Hossain Khan, adviser to the Newspaper Owners’ Association of Bangladesh (NOAB); Professor Mohammad Azam, director general of Bangla Academy; Dr Md Fakhrul Islam, secretary of the University Grants Commission (UGC); and Zainul Abedin, vice-chairman of the Bangladesh Bar Council.
Dr M Ramizuddin Chowdhury is also currently serving as a member of the board of directors at the Press Institute of Bangladesh (PIB).
The appointments are expected to strengthen the role of the council in promoting responsible journalism and protecting the interests of the media industry.
