A viral video involving a young man outside the Jamieson Red Crescent Maternity Hospital and Nursing Institute in Chattogram has sparked widespread discussion online. But investigations suggest the footage may be part of a larger scheme to destabilise the institutionโ€™s newly established management committee.

The controversy follows the recent formation of the hospital’s management body on 18 May, led by Professor Dr Imran Bin Yunus and Vice Chair Monirul Islam Yusuf. The committee was created under the broader restructuring of the Chattogram District Red Crescent Society, which itself formed an 11-member ad hoc committee in late April.

has been learned that the committee of the Chattogram District Red Crescent Society was formed on 30 April. As per official designation, the Administrator of the District Council was made the Chairman, Monirul Islam Yusuf was appointed as the Vice Chairman, and Abdul Awal Chowdhury as the Secretary, forming an 11-member ad hoc committee.

Subsequently, on 18 May, the management committee of the Jamieson Red Crescent Maternity Hospital and Nursing Institute was established. In that committee, Professor Dr. Imran Bin Yunus, a member of the BDRCS Ad Hoc Managing Board and former principal of Chattogram Medical College, was appointed as the Chairperson, Monirul Islam Yusuf as the Vice Chairperson, and Ala Uddin Patwari, the in-charge of the hospital, as the Member Secretary.

Since taking office, the hospital committee has introduced reforms aimed at correcting long-standing financial mismanagement and improving patient care. These changes have reportedly drawn resistance from individuals previously associated with irregular practices, who were either excluded from the new structure or lost access to informal privileges.

At the committeeโ€™s first official meeting on 13 July, concerns were raised over reports that Abdul Awal Chowdhury, secretary of the district Red Crescent Society, had used hospital vehicles for personal errandsโ€”an act deemed a breach of protocol. The committee decided to restrict all institutional resources from being used for non-official purposes going forward.

Officials familiar with the situation believe the viral video incident was orchestrated by parties with vested interests, hoping to tarnish the credibility of the new leadership. Additionally, attempts were allegedly made to reinstate a previously suspended chief administrative officer, further indicating internal friction over control of the hospital.

Despite the disruption, the hospital continues to operate under its new management, with reports of improved transparency and positive feedback from patients and their families. The leadership maintains that it remains focused on restoring accountability and resisting pressure from outside influences.
